The Big Universe                                                                                     Ian B. Dunne

There are some big things on the Earth - Blue Whales, Giant Redwood trees, volcanoes and mountains - but they're all tiny compared to the Earth, and the Sun is much bigger even than that. Out in space there are even bigger things, massive stars that make the Sun seem tiny, clouds of gas and dust and galaxies by the score. Actually Space itself is pretty huge. This talk is a big talk about big things - absolutely massive things in fact.                                                                                                                                   Suitable for ages 7 +

Oceans of climate change - science fact or media hype?
Dr Simon Boxall
Over the past months we have been bombarded with a myriad of facts and figures relating to Global Warming; with sea level rises of zero to 70 m. and temperature changes of 1 to 7 degrees.  A few scientists say it's natural, others that it is our fault, and some that burning more fossil fuels will actual help avert change!  What is the scientific evidence, how do the oceans play a role and what is going on in the polar regions of Earth?  Evidence will be shown based on various expeditions to the extreme parts of our planet to search for the answers and the science behind the causes of climate change explained.  Are we heading to a very different world by 2080? Save energy, turn the TV off, and come and find out!

Simon Boxall is an Oceanography lecturer at the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) in the University of Southampton.
