A Vortex can be made by spinning the water.
Activity.... Do - Think - Learn
A vortex is a particular kind of movement in liquids (fluids).
What do you think will happen to the balls when you turn the handle?
Which way did you have to turn the handle?
How hard is it to make the water move?
Does it get harder or easier once you have started?
How is a vortex made naturally?
Where will you find a vortex at home?
The Science Bit
A vortex is a large spiral motion in a small volume of fluid.
A vortex is like a whirlpool in water and is formed by opposing currents. Large vortexes can occur in the sea and rapids on rivers create them as well. A vortex can also be created when an oar is used. They can come in all different sizes.
As the fluid spins the heavy water is forced away from the centre of rotation and air(and the light balls) are dragged down into the centre.

Pushes and Pulls
- That it is not only ourselves that make things move by pushing
- To ask questions about what is causing movement
Forces and Movement
- That pushes and pulls can make things speed up or slow down or change direction
- That pushes and pulls are examples of forces
Forces in Action
- That several forces may act on one object (causes Vortex in water)
