Activity.... Do – Think - Learn
Telescopes give close up views of objects that are far away. Mirrors or lenses are used to form magnifies images.
Which lens will magnify the most?
Use the lever and rotate the telescope to look at a distant object. Select a lens. Look through the eye piece and move the lens carriers to focus on an object. Try different lenses.
How far can you see clearly?
How do telescopes work?
Who would use a telescope?
The Science Bit
The telescope is an optical instrument that enables us to see faint images and distant objects by magnifying them. Telescopes that are small can be found on cameras and rifles. If the telescope has a large opening it can identify more detail than one with a small opening. There are two main types of telescope:
- Refracting telescope (lenses)
- Reflecting telescope (mirrors)
There is a third type, the catadioptic telescope, which uses both lenses and mirrors. The telescope at INTECH has different lenses. Larger telescopes can now be placed in orbit, or used on the ground to monitor our solar system.
