Living things have several special senses which help them to find out about their surroundings. The sense of touch is very important, especially if you are blind.

The Science Bit
When it is dark or we have limited sight our other senses become more important to us. The sense of touch helps us to identify and find things if there is limited light or in this case an object blocking our view.
Many living things rely heavily on their sense of touch, such as humans with impaired sight or nocturnal living animals.
See the Braille exhibit for another way to read information using the sense of touch.
