Lock Box demonstrates how a simple mortice lock works.
Activity.... Do – Think – Learn
The lock box is an example of a lever lock. The levers in the lock have to be moved by the key to operate the lock.
Where would you use locks?
Can you think of any other types of locks that do not use keys?
The Science Bit
The shaped edge of the key acts as a series of wedges that raises the pins to free the lock. The shapes on the key most match the tumblers in the lock for the key to be able to open the lock. In turning the key the tumblers in the lock are lifted. The bolt pin is freed so that it can move along the slots. AS the key continues to turn the bolt continues to move forward.
